Manly Spirits Co. Distillery has recently been awarded World’s Best Premix Bottle Design at the World Premix Awards in London 2021 for their ready to drink Pink Gin and Tonic 275ml bottles. Another outstanding addition to their collection of awards from the likes of World Gin Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine & Spirits Competition.
“In designing our bespoke glass bottles, it was really important that we maintained our well-known and loved visual aesthetic.” Says Vanessa, designer of the bespoke bottles and co-owner of Manly Spirits. “Our 700ml bottles have won international design awards, and we know our fans love the unique marine, retro design, so we absolutely didn’t want to compromise on the design of the RTD bottles. We wanted people to be able to enjoy what they already know and love about our 700ml gins, in smaller 275ml bottles.”
Being a premium brand with a strong focus on sourcing ‘local’, using recyclable Australian packaging and ingredients is important for Manly Spirits, particularly as Manly Spirits co-owners, David Whittaker and Vanessa Wilton, have a long history as avid ocean swimmers and surf life savers with a passion for the Australian marine life.
Though making this happen proved to be a challenge for the small business. Vanessa says, “It’s definitely not for the faint hearted, as minimum manufacturing runs for glass production in Australia made our eyes water, but you have to back yourselves being a bit different from the crowd of cans. And in our commitment to sustainability, we’re so glad we were able to make the packaging fully recyclable.”
The resulting design of our bespoke glass bottles feature our signature Manly Spirits Fibonacci pattern, complete with ‘Manly Spirits Co.’ embossing.
The products and packaging are all Australian made with no plastic involved. The ingredients, labels and packaging, and the glass bottles themselves, prove that Australian manufacturing is still alive and thriving.
“Every piece of this product can be recycled and reused. Now more than ever we need to think a bit beyond the drink, and design for a product’s entire lifecycle, including life after use,” Vanessa Says. “Our goal is for people to move away from single use and either upcycle or recycle our bottles and packaging. The bottles are so attractive that they can be used as dispensers for soap or creams or for a wide range of other uses. We use them in our distillery tasting bar for our cocktail syrups.”
